MASQUERADE

WHAT
Masquerade is a digital photography series consisting of six portraits
with two subjects & one theme.
Shot on location in Paris, France on the 26th of June 2009

WHEN

Debut exhibition was during the collective exposition PLASTIC JESUS II
at Berchtoldvilla in Salzburg, Austria
from the 18th of March until the 30th of April 2011

You can grasp the scale of the pieces with these Pre-Vernissage images:
wall 1 & wall 2

An exclusive digital art video entitled ELEMENT0
was created for & displayed during the exhibit.
The video features the male model from my photography series,
in an alternate mask, coming in & out of shadows,
a reoccurring conceptual text acting as the masked character’s thoughts
& a stereo mix of rhythmic background music;

WHO
This presentation would not have been possible
without the tremendous & kind efforts of these amazing individuals:
Sara Bubna, FV, Tobias Hammerle, Haydeé Jiménez & Simon Bruckbacher.

ABOUT
Firstly: My work & these masks are NOT related in anything to S&M practices.

The Mexican fighter mask represents bravery, showmanship, struggle, justice
& of course, strength.

With this portrait series, I present the spiritual conflicts that human beings are faced with as they learn to adapt within the uncaring structure of
a host country characterized by a clear definition of social & political systems.

Attempting to define a clear role for themselves in a city where they are confronted by fear, disdain, solitude, various needs & the loss of self esteem through lack of work, the mask is an instrument which shields the man & the woman with assertion to mingle in cultural environments where physical proximity & mental distance overlap.

The city has lived, lives in the moment & will continue functioning uncaringly.
So to put on the mask means we abandon our vulnerability
& even our identity to project a stronger personality… a super hero,
a more secure face by which we forget our true self in order to take action.
